Hancock County's Weir High School English Teacher Named 2011 Milken Educator Awards Winner

On November 14, 2011, Dr. Jane Foley came to Weir High School to be a part of a special assembly that featured WV Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jorrea Marple. Dr. Foley is the Sr. Vice President of the Milken Educator Awards from the Milken Family Foundation. Dr. Foley and Dr. Marple addressed the students of Weir High about the importance of educators in their lives. Dr. Marple told the audience that the Northern Panhandle has been well represented by the teachers and students at Weir High and Weir Middle School.

Dr. Foley went a few steps further as she explained that the foundation that she represented was in town for. Dr. Foley explained that “the Milken Educator Awards provide recognition and financial awards of $25,000 to exceptional elementary and secondary school teachers, principals, and specialists who are furthering excellence in our nation’s schools. This year up to 40 of America’s finest educators will be honored.” Dr. Foley explained that “a $25,000 ward was going to be presented at Weir High School this morning by the Milken Foundation”.  There was a buzz in the crowd as Dr. Foley took the envelope from Dr. Marple and proceeded to tell the crowd…..this year’s winner of the WV Milken Award and the recipient of a $25,000  financial award was none other than……..Mrs. Dulick!!!

The crowd bursted with an ovation and a very stunned Mrs. Dulick was escorted to mid court to receive a very large $25,000 check made out to her. A very appreciative Mrs. Dulick thanked the Weir High Administration, teachers, and especially her students. She also said that she was very surprised and felt that any of the other Weir teachers could be standing up there receiving this award because they all deserved it. Mrs. Dulick was given congratulations from her colleagues, students, and invited guests as she let the impact of the moment sink in. Still stunned and shaking her head, Mrs. Dulick did radio and television interviews about her prestigious honor. Weir Principal, Dan Enich summed up the event by saying that, “You do not win a Milken Foundation award from being a sometime, or “by the way” teacher. You win honors like this when no one is looking. When you are by yourself preparing yourself through National Boards or advanced degrees and training in an effort to give everything you can to the students that you teach…congratulations Mrs. Dulick on this honor. It is well deserved.”

Other special guests Joining Dr. Marple and Dr. Foley   were 100 Weir Middle School students that met a distinguished mark on the WESTEST, WV State Department representative Liza Cuordero, Hancock County Superintendent Sue Smith, Weir Middle School Principal Terry McAtee, Hancock County BOE members Jerry Durante, Laura Greathouse, and Toni Hinerman.  The Weir Cheerleaders also  gave a 3 minute demonstration of their upcoming routine for state competition.
